Questions regarding iphone and pda

I have just purchased an iphone and my existing phone was an orange SPV M700.

The SPV connected to the my laptop and sync. with the microsoft outlook exchange server to get my calander, contacts and emails.

I was wondering if there was any way to get the contacts onto the iphone?
the technician at work informs me that the iphone will not be able to sync with the exchange server because its still running 2000 for somereason (he said exactly why but i cannot remember) to overcome this problem i have been told to setup an email with gmail and the emails i get in my normal inbox will just get forwarded to this.

I plan on getting rid of the SPV and using just the iphone if this is possible, i was wondering if there was anyway to sync the iphone with the emails, contacts and calender on the laptop?

i was also wondering if there is anyway to get word documents open on the iphone, the guy in the apple store that sold me the phone said there is a program i can download for the iphone??

Thanks for any help on this matter as its really confusing me.
