Angry O2 XDAIIi - How to unlock the phone

Hi,
I just got off from a huge fight with O2 customer service.
When I bought my phone, the sales assistant in the O2 branch re-assured me that the phone is unlocked and will work with any sim-card.

I am about to leave for Greece in 3 days, and was testing my phone to see whether it works with my Greek Sim-Card...

IT DOESN'T... It asks for a Network Unlock Code... I called O2 and told me that the phone is locked and will take 21 days for it to be unlocked + 15 pounds....

Does any one know what I can do to make my phone work with another sim-card???

And one more question... Does the phone work without a sim card? Will I be able to use the phone along with my GPS (TomTom Navigator 3 Bluetooth) without actually having a sim-card in it??

Thank you,

Ilias

I can't find any information on unlocking it. Looks like you'll have to pay and wait or take it to a mobile phone shop to be unlocked.
The PDA will work as normal without a SIM card installed, obviously you won't be able to use the phone feature though.

Thanks for the reply Charlie...

Well it seems that O2 customer service is the worst ever...
After the call I gave them yesterday I went to the O2 shop I purchased the phone but still they could not unlock it. I also went to 3 mobile phone shops to get it unlocked but they couldn't do it...

I called again O2 customer service and this time it was awful....

They told me that in order to get my phone unlocked, I have to pay the full contract till its termination date up-front plus 15 pounds which adds up to 330 pounds....

This is crazy!!!!!

I am now looking on the Internet to find ways of unlocking it...

If anyone comes across any solutions, it would be really helpful!!

Thank you,

Ilias

I don't think there are any ways to unlock it...at least I've found nothing online about it.

Often, if you walk into an independent mobile store they will provide an unlocking service for you - but its not strictly the best way forward as they have to get the back off the device and mess around with the settings inside the phone.

O2 will charge you the remainder of the contract length for two reasons:

1) They are rubbish.
2) If you unlock it, then you can use any operators Sim in the device so they are potentially going to lose revenue - i.e. they wouldn't pick up any of the roaming GSM And GPRS charges for your trip to Greece.

Unhelpful, I know - but there you have it.

Cheers

Andy.

To be fair to O2 they are within their rights to charge you for the remainder of the contract period. Firstly, when you bought the Xda you will have signed up to a 12-month contract to use their network. You are now asking to use a different network, which is against the terms you orignally agreed. Secondly, and because you signed up to the contract, you will have bought the Xda at a vastly reduced price (dependent on the contract you are on). For instance, I bought mine for £100, whereas in reality it is probably worth £400 - £500.
Sorry, but that's how it works!
Clive

Completely agree with you re the revenue and handset subsidy side of life. Although i would take slight issue with the comment "...against the terms you orignally agreed" as its clearly been mis-sold. At best its a lack of understanding from the sales person who should know better.

My point (number 1 - O2 are rubbish) is based on the poor standard of service that the gent who posted originally received from O2. They should never have told him that the XDA was unlocked - the basic training that the retail staff go through at O2 covers exactly this sort of scenario.

The main part of the post, the unlocking of the device - you can achieve, although you'll pay for the priviledge. The difficult bit is in finding the locations to do it.

Andy.

Just be ware though, UNLESS you get the unlock code from O2 (same applies to any operator and their smart phones) then you void your warranty on the device!
