Installing 3rd party softwares on XDA II MINI

hi all,
i wanted to ask whether we can install the any softwares for my XDAII MINI in the SD MEMORY CARD ??
one more thing i wanted to ask is what is the use of ROM in XDA ?
Are we allowed to store anything on ROM ??
IF NOT ....and if it is used for storing OS and other s/w that manufacturer by default store in it and if we as the users are not allowed to store anything on it ....WHAT DIFFERENCE IT MAKES IF ROM IS 64MB or 128MB

IF YES...means we are allowed to store/install any softwares on ROM ...then why it is called as READ ONLY MEMORY ????
