Default Opinions on the Dell X50 ...

I'm in the process of buying a new PDA/GPS setup. I want the functionality of a PDA rather than an 'all in one' unit so I've been looking at some of the various combinations I could go for.

I like the look of the Dell X50 range but have never actually seen one. Anyone had any experience of these?

I did look at the IPAQ hx4700 but I just don't like the trackpad idea and its too darned expensive for my tastes.

I thought about waiting for HP to release the 2410 but its more expensive than the VGA Dell. I'm looking mainly at the mid range X50 though as I don't really have a need for the VGA.

Is the IPAQ that much better than the Dell? Is there more that comes with it? Or should I be looking at something else anyway ;-)

I've not owned a PDA since I had an old Palm III so I'm completely out of touch with all of this.

Thanks

I prefer iPAQ simply through lots of use. I have seen and used some of the DELL models and was never happy with the style or feel of the units. I would recommend you go along to PC World or similar and have a play around with them to see which you feel comfortable with.

I do like the look and feel of the IPAQs a lot of my colleagues have, its just the cost that I'm looking at with regard to them. I can get the VGA X50v for less than the expected cost of the hx2410!

BTW, is there a known release date for the newer 2000 series? Most sites seem a little vague on it.

Is there any way I can actually see and test a Dell without buying one?

I did try going into PC World today, but they got off to a bad start by labeling an older IPAQ as an hx4700. Then they failed to find any in the store room and to finish off told me they wouldn't open the box anyway (even if they had found it).

May be they guessed I had no intention of buying it from them ;-)

I wouldn't buy anything from PC world.
They have a policy that if you buy anything from them and open it they won't give you a refund whether it works of not.

So if you buy a USB device which your machine doesn't pick up and other USB devices seem to work on your machine. Which mean's there's something wrong with the device, or it's incompatible, they don't even offer an exchange let alone a refund..
No thank you.

Falkon try other high street stores. Currys, Dixons and Comet etc usually have units on display in cabinets and will let you play around with them.

y0u5uf we wre not talking about buying from PC World, merley using their services to establish if Falkon would be happy with a particular model of PDA but thanks for your thoughts.
