Angry Dell Axim X30 freezes -Hardware or software problem?

My refurbished Dell Axim X30 freezes when i am driving along. It does it to no pattern but when it does, you can touch the screen, press any button you like and it just hangs. the only way to deal with it is a soft restart (press the small button on the back) or take the battery out.
Have you tried doing either of these on the motorway?

Is this a hardware problem -if so, hopefully covered by the warranty -or a software problem.

Here comes the techie bit;
Dell X30 624 MHz (variable) with Kingston 512Mb storage card running tom tom Nav 5 software with wired tom tom GPs receiver and windscreen mount.

Thanks

if you left the battery out for about 1 hour the unit should hard reset (ie when you put the batter back in the unit will ask you to align the screen).

Thanks for this. I originally thought the unit was getting too hot -exposed under the windscreen with all that sun coming in. However, I now think the battery and/or charging mechanism is at fault. It hung again, and the battery was very hot at the back. it has lost all my settings. Would this be compatible with battery failure? Is this a warranty issue? My Dell was a refurbished unit -any way of discovering whether this was the original problem the previous owner had? Battery is Dell X11111 3.7V 950mAh.

so back to my original question -is this covered under the warranty?
Any floating total pda people please respond and advise what we have to do
If a new battery will fix this please tell us

DV8 -are you not cross that your Dell keeps hanging? Especially as it is new! Dont; forget that the onus is upon the retailer to prove "fit for purpose" and if it within 6 months of you buying the item you have a pretty cast iron case for a refund.

Whether it's covered under warranty or not depends on if it's a fault or not. Most lockups are due to too many programs running at the same time in the background. Check whats running by tapping on START --> SETTINGS --> SYSTEM --> MEMORY --> RUNNING PROGRAMS. If there are a few the nit could be that your PDA is running low on memory. Tap the STOP ALL button then try TomTom again and see if it still hangs.

Charlie
thanks for that
usually check that using task switcher
Often it is only Activesync running (which i try to close)
however, Tom Tom has about three programs it runs itself!
Tom tom plus tom tom GPS plus london streets???
Surely this should be ok?
Cannot access Tom Tom unless you go through the Dell interface.
Can the memory be upgraded on this machine?
