Angry X5 with TT5 locks up

Hello everyone,

A friend told me about this site and after reading some of the Dell Axim X5 threads I seem to be having similar problems but not sure what I need to do to correct the hangups.

Dell Axim X5 running Pocket PC Version 3.0.11171 (build 11178)
TomTom Navigator version 5.210 (5430)
GPS driver v1.20
Wired GPS receiver which came with the PDA
All from THE auction site!
Problem:
The PDA (X5) hangs on odd occassions when I connect it up in the car,
most times it works fine.

After dwnloading the totalgps camera's and activating them before leaving work last Friday I tried to use the PDA/SatNav to see if all the gatso's etc that I know about were on my route home.
No luck there, It failed to detect the GPS, just said "No GPS device" so I spent 10 minutes doing soft resets, due to total system hangups and numerous re-configures of the GPS hardware.
No joy, it just refused to work.
This has happened on 2 or 3 occassions before.
Last week it worked perfectly OK to get me to/from Swansea.

I see from some of the threads here that a software update is recomended and/or contacting TomTom.

I have also just purchased a CF reciever with the hope that my problem is possibly with my wired receiver. It hasn't arrived yet so cannot say if this is the problem.

Any Help/Advice appreciated
Thanks in Advance.
Tony.

Think I have found the problem with the hangups.
Today I tried another route to Ally Pally only to see the same as above, so whilst sat passenger on the journey I started playing with the system memory on the X5. I noticed it was a little on the low side on the free storage reading. So I adjusted it to give that a larger figure and I stopped all running programs, Contacts etc... Hey Presto, TomTom worked and it picked up the GPS within a mile or so.
So this problem must be caused by running with very low available memory.
Anybody know how much memory TomTom and the Receiver require to run?

I have had a Dell Axim X5 (Povket Windows 2002) for 2 years and I have the same problem with TomTom Navigator 5 sometimes going almost unaudible. This also always happens when you switch off the PDA with TomTom still running. A soft reset seems to resolve the problem.

Last week I bought a second Axim X5, second hand, mainly for use with Memorty Map OS. This one is identical to my older example, excapt that it is running Pocket Windows 2003. After installing TomTom Navigator 5, the audio problem is there all of the time with the newer maching, and if it isn't almost muted, it stutters beyond a joke! I have tried downloading a different TomTom voice, but it makes no difference.

Both Axim X5s are the 400 MHz versions. Also, all other programs' audio is fine.

Help please!!!

Ian

Had an X5 and found it'd do this if TT left running when turning off the PDA. As you've found, a soft reset is the only fix when it happens

Only way around, as to shut down TT everytime and disconnect the GPS (both before power down or power up). Never had any problems once I started doing this.

This problem has never really gone away, but my X5 worked up until today more than it failed.
Because of the slow GPS signal pickup I purchased a
"Globalsat Sirf III/3 Wired Satnav GPS" model br-355. Only to find it did not work, but, the package came with a useful program called GPSinfo. Using this program on my X5 tells me if the connected GPS Receiver is picking up a signal, how many satellites, GPS position etc... A very useful tool.
So getting to my problem, GPSinfo shows my (old) receiver as working fine, many satellites in a very short time are picked up.
So satisfied that the receiver is working I started TTN5 on my Dell Axim X5 and the GPS Status screen indicates "No GPS Device" which meant today I travelled 350 miles without a working SatNav.
Dell has had the PPC (2002) Version 3.0.11171 (build 11178) Reinstalled following a failed upgrade to PPC 2003
TTN5 is now running Version 5.210 (5431)
These 2 changes made months ago and have until today been working fine.
These 2 changes plus the recent addition of a Western Europe map, are the only changes I have made so I cannot understand why the PDA (TTN5) is now refusing the get the GPS signal. Can anybody suggest anything I can try/update or whatever to cure this annoying problem.
Thanks in Advance

Purchased a TomTom Bluetooth GPS receiver to use with my new X51V and a Nokia N95 mobile. fantastic receiver. I had purchased a Belkin Bluetooth CF card some time ago for the X5, but never got it to work. Tried again by installing it onto the device and it worked OK. Since this post was started I have hard reset the X5 and re-installed everything including TTN5. End result is it works fine now. Just waiting to see if the lock ups return, which I don't think will happen now.
