This is a discussion on pda as storage within the Dell forums, part of the Pocket PC category; can one use a pda - say the x51v as storage - to be able to plug it into a pc without ...
You would need active sync to have access to the x51 from Windows.

There are a couple of apps that would give you USB access to your device, by-passing ActiveSync. I prefer Card Export II, which lets you toggle your device between ActiveSync and USB storage device behavior when connecting to host PC.

I should be more specific. It gives access to memory cards, so the device functions like a card reader. There is another app specifically for WM5 devices called WM5torage that has the same functionality - it gives direct access to memory cards on the device through the USB connection.
The palm lifedrive used to function as a USB storage. You could have the sync software loaded on it and then transfer it to the pc to install if need be. Smart thinking by palm but they then discontinued the lifedrive without a replacement

Hmmm... can't you just write directly to the card via explorer in the same way that you can write to the internal storage folder? (I haven't bought a storage card yet).
Does this mean that unless I use, for example, Card Export II, then I need a card reader... can't the device itself (I have an XDA IIs), act as a card reader?
It will do that but you would have to load activesync onto the PC you were connecting too in order for it to transfer info.
