Default Newbie in Need - - GPS For Sony Clie NX70V/E

Hi folks,

I've been reading through all the threads already here and I know this question gets asked a lot but here we go again.....

What GPS package should I get??

I already have a Sony Clie NX70V which runs Palm OS v.5, but no bluetooth, so it will need to be hardwired.

All I want is something that will tell me where to go and when (ie voice directions) and auto reroute when I forget to turn off!

Cost is a MAJOR issue here so cheap but functional is the main criteria it has to meet.

I have never owned any type of GPS before but have been gagging for it for months, please help me and I shall be forever in you debt (...well...kinda!!)

Thanks

Welcome to our forums.
The only one we can recommend would be the Kirrio system. it lists the NX70 (not V) as compatible and to be honest I don't know the difference between the V and non-V models. You can check it out @ http://www.totalpda.co.uk/Kirrio-Voi...or-PalmOS.aspx .

Thanks for the advice, I just had a look at the ad and it sounds nice enough... but I thought tomtom was also available on palm!?!

By the way the only difference between the NX70-V is it has slightly more functions (apparently).

WHen I looked at the add for the suggestion GPS I saw this bit:

NAVIGATION FUNCTION

With a GPS antenna*, the route is calculated and then re-adjusted in real-time as you go along, with the map turning depending on the direction you are moving in. All the necessary information concerning the route is available (distance remaining, next exit to take, etc.) and the voice directions will guide you clearly and efficiently, transforming your Palm into a genuine on-board navigation system.

* This function requires a NMEA 2.0 compatible GPS module, based on datum WGS84.

Particularly the bit with the * as this is different from the one supplied in the kit.........does this matter, or would I have to immediately upgrade the reciever!!! (I know..I'm thick, but such is the life of a newbie )

Thanks

No the receiver supplied will work with the software. TomTom is only compatible with the Palm Tungsten T3 for now (at least thats all they support).

on a slighty different point, would i be better just to start from scratch with a pocket pc and gps? I have considered changing to ipac or similar in the past but all my colleagues are still on palms so i have no idea if they are any better or not.
My understanding is that they are easier to sync as it is windows based and for email etc they have better compatibility, is this true?
There certainly seems to be far more choice on gps software with ipac / pocket pcs, but are they and more functional or more reliable?

sorry for the list of questions, and thanks in advance.
(I know you probably can't recommend any one particular combo but if you can that would be great)

Thanks

My personal favourite PPC is the iPAQ H4150 because it has both BT and Wifi built in and is one of the smallest PDAs out there. I used the be a Palm user and my last Palm was the m515 which was useful but most times it just sat in the drawer. Since moving to PPC I find I use the PPC more than ever because it gives you the familiar experience you are used to with the Windows OS. I can't say you'll like moving from Palm to PPC but in my opinion it does offer better compatibility etc than the Palm options.
