Hear hear! I have experienced similar problems and it is a total, utter, absolute NIGHTMARE.
After first installation, when I went back to add maps, it said the TomTom account was not associated with this device - create another? Yes, I did. I now have 4 TomTom accounts and none of them are recognised. Although, if I check online on each account, they all have the correct Device ID!
I have two sets of maps (W Europe and North America, where we are visiting soon). The W Europe maps I can install and activate. When I try and Activate the USA maps, I go to ttcode.com, it gives ma a code quoting the correct Device ID, but the activation is not accepted as valid by TomTom.
Customer services did not read any of my message to them and simply said the Maps for US had been activated, quoting the codes for the Europe maps!. Thanks a bundle!
I did do a backup early on but now backup and restore do not work, saying "no valid TomTom device", even though it installs (but not activates) maps and the program and shows them for removal etc.
IF you want an excellent navigator of Europe look at: Pocket Navigator 6.
http://directions.ltd.uk/personal-navigation/ I only went to TomTom as Pocket Navigator don't do maps for USA.
Oh, and the maps for Spain, where I live, are so out of date. The TomTom site tells me I have the very latest maps too! Great stuff.
I HATE TomTom.
(I have Navigator 6 supposedly to run on IPAQ hx2490)
