Default New to GPS - HELP

Im hoping that someone can point me in the right direction with GPS because im lost and i dont have a clue what to do...

Firstly im in the market for a portable GPS system, I was thinking thats a PDA type system would suit me(please dont laugh if i sound a complete wally)

1. I want to use the thing in both my car and on my bike (so an ear piece output would help)
2. what software /pda bundle should i get?
3. do i have to pay anything to the likes of TomTom on a per month basis?
4. can i get maps for france?

do you motorbike or bicycle?
I use a i-mate jam (PDA/phone) and running tomtom Bluetooth. I hook the PDA up to my speakers in my helmet and keep the GPS in my pocket and just listen to the voice instructions.

You don’t currently have to pay any subscriptions to use tomtom. And yes you can get maps for France
