Default Not Enough Memory Error

Hi all,

I'll be the first to admit I know nothing about the tecnical specifics of PDAs, but this prblem seems weird to me. I have an HP RZ 1710 with the viaMichelin Navigation kit. All was well and the sat nav was working fine, until one day I tried to run the program and the error "Not enough memory" appeared. The reason I find this a little strange is that the only thing I've added to the PDA is a few new calendar appointments. If anybody can offer any suggestions I'd be very grateful. Oh and sorry if you're missing the technical specifics that you need, the only thing I know is that the PDA has a 128mb viaMichelin SD card slotted into it.

Cheers

Mark

Hi Mark
I have the same setup- iPAQ rz1710 running viaMichelin. A great setup for Navigation.
The biggest problem is that the 1710 has a tiny internal memory and this leaves very little room for extra programmes. However, I have over two years of appointments on mine and it is still OK.
Your error message "not enough memory" will probably clear if you do a soft reset.
Do this by pressing the stylus into the little hole on the bottom of the 1710 (under the first button.)
This usually clears the problem.

Dave you're a star, that worked like a charm. Thank a lot for the very easy (read non-techie) fix!

On another note. Has anybody ever had problems with searching for directions using postcodes? It will find streets and towns no problem, but if I try to put a post code in it always tells me that I can't find it. I've never had any luck at all doing a search by postcode.

Hi Mark
viaMichelin only recognises 4 digits in UK postcodes. So S70 4SN won't be recognised but S70 4 will. This gets you to town and area and you just have to input the street. In this it is like Tomtom 3.
Another quirk is that it only knows certain house numbers on a street so you have to go to nearest number.
Personally I find viaMichelin far better that Tomtom Navigator 5 but not quite as good as Tomtom 3.
If you are thinking of using a larger SD card let me know and I will send you a Michelin fix that will enable you to do this. I will send it as a private message.

Pastor Dave, Please can you help me?
Yesterday I bought my first ipaq, the 1710 Navigator using viaMichelin. I'm so new to all this I'm green! Any help (In very simple terms)would be much appriciated.

1. Having gone for "Quickstart" and inserted a memory card with Via Michelin on it, do I also have to install the same program from the CD?

2. Will i then be able to save my start point (ie my home address). I can't find how to save it currently.

3. If I have to install from the CD, do i need to remove the memory card first?

4. Once i've got the above sorted, i would love to load speed camera warnings. Is this possible and if so, how do i do it?

I will be forever grateful for any help you can give me. and i hope you don't mind that ive just dived in on you, you're the first person i've found using the system successfully.
Many thanks

Hi Blandford
Congratulations. It is a great system that does exactly what it says on the box.
Your answers:
1. NO. When you first start from SD card supplied it will automatically install on 1710. Then viaMichelin will auto start every time you put it into the cradle and switch on ignition.
2. YES. Navigate to an address and when you get to Route Summary page there are three icons on the right. The second one, at the side of destination, is to save this address. This icon will take you to a screen 'new Saved item'. Give this a name (home or whatever) then OK. Next time you 'navigate to' use the 'my saved Items' button.
3. NO
4. I haven't found one yet - I too would like this facility.

Re the CD. This installs the programe on your PC. However, you need a quick fix from Michelin for this.
The link is http://www.viamichelin.co.uk/viamichelin/gbr/tpl/psg/produits/htm/patch_rz1710.htm
You will only need this if you intend installing viaMIchelin on a bigger SD card.
Good luck.

What A Gem You are!!! Thank you, Apparently you can add Speed camera locations as a POI (and lets face it, who isn't interested?) I know i read it somewhere, and as soon as i find it i'll let you know the website. Chances are you will understand it all.
I'm cutting and pasting your answer into word for future ref, its by far the easiest answer to understand i have ever had. Thank you again

Pastor Dave,
Having just posted my grateful thanks I found this which I'm sure you could make sense of ......

I have been playing (without a GPS Receiver) with the demo of latest version of Mapsonic (downloaded from the viaMichelin website http://www.shop.viamichelin.co.uk/shopexd.asp?catalogid=316 and click on “Demo”) prior to Santa bringing me the full version later in the month and it would seem to address a lot of the issues previously mentioned on this and other Forums.

1. If you set the speed in MPH then they now provide distance prompts in yards
2. It is possible to import the speed camera POI data from this site, as follows:
  • A Download files from pocketgps

B Using MS Paint resize the icons for each of the file types to 16x16 pixels (72% scaling seems to achieve this in Image/Stretch-Skew) you may want to then edit the image to reintroduce some white to the inside of the camera. I have used colour to differentiate between the different types of device –White for Gatso, Red for SPECS and so on.

C In Mapstore add the new POI classifications and assign the appropriate graphics file. DO NOT DO THIS IN MAPSONIC ON THE PDA
The above two processes are only required the first time you do this

D Using POIEdit (downloadable from http://www.dnote.nl/pda/poi/PoiEdit) convert the POI file to a POI ASCII file (open it in POIEdit and then choose Save As)

E Using POIManager import the POI files. It will ask you to synchronise after adding each file but click cancel and you can add other files so that you do all of the imports in one go. Note that the POI files have to reside on the PDA and not on the memory card to work. This process also copies over the graphic files associated with the POIs. You do not need to copy them over to the PDA

F If you wish to download an updated file you repeat the above POIEdit/POIManager proces,s (D and E above) but note that it seems that you need to delete the file on the PDA before you start or you will get a synchronisation error. On the PC side this is not an issue.
3. I suspect, although I have not proved this, that users of of MapSonic version 1.3 (and older?) can simply copy over all of the files from the Demo download (Michelin state that the only difference between the demo and the full version is the size of the map file) to the directory where their current application files are and benefit from all of the above. Alternatively Michelin invite registered user of MapSonic 1.3 to contact their Technical Support people to get the new version
Apologies for the somewhat longwinded (and first!) post but hope this is useful. The product does seem to be improving and all I have do now is to wait for Xmas.

I do hope you'll find this of some use. Happy Driving
