Etrex Vista C and maps

I currently have a basic yellow Etrex. Have been doing some walking in Norway and got to borrow an Etrex Vista C loaded with 1:50,000 maps. I was so impressed that I decided to buy one when I came back.

However when I search for similar UK maps for the Etrex Vista C it seems that there are none available which can be downloaded to the Vista C.

Am I missing something here or is there a way that I can download 1:50,000 UK maps (rather than prepared routes) to the Vista C.

Alternatively I understand it is possible to download ordnance survey maps to a pda. Are there any PDA / GPS setups which would be suitable to use for walking. How about battery life, portability, robustness.
