It really all depends on what PDA you want I would recommend that you have a look at the 2210, 4150 or the 5550 all PPC based. Palm based the T3 is about the best model available. Standalone the Navman IC 630 is great but Tom Tom are going to be bringing out there standlone system Tom Tom GO.

Software wise I would really say its down to user preference due to they both have 3D displays + voice prompts etc. Have a look on the web and read customers reviews.

Thanks. 3 questions

1) I already have a Toshiba e740 PDA. I was looking just for software not IPAQ hardware. What is available?

2) Do standalone systems offer anything over PDA based ones?

3) Navman ICN630 is 'high-end' Is there something more basic?

Well tom tom and navman are the leaders, there is not much between the two.

Standalone systems are more reliable, this is due handhelds do require soft resets from time to time, the only down fall is they only do GPS, don’t get any calendar, contacts, mp3 player etc.

You could look at the ICN620, or the other systems like the Garmins on the market.
