Default Navman PiN 168 (mio 168) GPS Problems

Hi all, from australia,

I've just obtained a Navman PiN 168 (mio 168).

The previous owner whiped everything, however I've installed maps for my location, and the software (as far as I can tell) seems to be up to date and fine.

I'm using SmartST v2 (SP1), I've set the GPS to com2 and 4800.

I've left it on for about 20minutes so far and it's still no picking up a signal. Issue with the device or should I leave it for longer?

I have no idea how long it has been off for.

Cheers in advance for any help.

All good. Really bad overcast here in Melbourne today, had to stand on second story builing to get it to find the GPS.

Hopefully it clears up so I can use it tonight!

The TTFF (time to first fix) can take anything up to 45 minutes on first installation.

The longer you leave it between use the longer it will take to get a fix. A HOT start, having switched it off for a few hours, you should get a fix within a minute or shortly after. If you haven't used it overnight it may take between two and five minutes.

If, for example, you last used it in Perth, left it switched off and switched on again in Melbourne, you would find it will take up to 45 minutes again as the data has to be recollected for your new position.

Another couple of things to remember. If your car has an athermic (heat resisting windscreen) it will take forever to get a lock when inside the car. To get around this just make sure you get a good fix on at least 6 sats before setting up inside the car. The other point is, never drive off before you get a fix. Put these two points together and you'd be lucky to get a fix this side of England winning the ashes again.

There is a GPS firmware upgrade available that will improve the GPS reception 100%. I never locked on to any sats when sitting in my kitchen, after the upgrade (done via the SD card ) I now get 4 or 5 good sats within 1 minute. Outside I seldom get less then 8 good blue lines.
