Tomtom Go 720

Hello everyone I am a newbie and this is my first post so I hope my question will not sound to silly,
Could you tell me if I change to the Eastern European map (which I downloaded and installed) while I am in Western Europe (UK) would I get a GPS signal? Do I have to be in Eastern Europe before I can use that map to receive a signal, which would enable me to navigate?
