Scanning maps

Another question for the knowledgeable! I like the sound of the all-bells, all-singing GPS + PDAs available BUT I am less interested in having a road map than in scanning a 1:50,000 walking map for when I'm in the hills (not in the UK but in the Alps, so Ordnance Survey of no use, alas). Any software to enable me to do this?

I believe Fugawi allows you to do this but I've never used it.
