E-mail alerts on PDA

Hi,

I am new to PDAs and dont know whether they can do what I want them to. I have an email server and I want to setup a PDA with an email account. Is there any software out there (pocket Outlook etc.) that will automatically alert me when I receive an email to the designated PDA account i.e. without me having to initiate a PULL / PUSH. I want this to work like my laptop does and alert me with a tone as whenever I receive a messge (like receiving a text message). If this is possible do I need to be "always connected" to the internet via the PDA to achieve this?

Any help / ideas on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
