Angry Effect of soft restart

I hve not had my iPAQ long, but unfortunately, after taking it out of the car I accidentally failed to power it down and discovered that it was still on with tomtom 5 running about 5 hours later. The screen was almost illegible, but I powered it down and then recharged the battery from AC as soon as I could, which was about 3 hours later. I don't know if the batter was completely drained as it was hard to see the screen.
The battery got up to full power with no problem, but I could not get the screen to come up to full brightness. I did a soft re-start and was up and running properly again but when I went to start tom tom it told me that I had no maps and was directing me to register again. I thought that a soft restart did not delete saved files, such as maps.

Could the soft restart have caused this?

Is there an easier way to restore brightness without a soft restart if I do this again? By way of clarification the brightness settings would move with the stylus, but with no change in the brightness itself.

Any help would be appreciated.
