 iPAQ4700 Bluetooth only half working!

Registered today as have searched for ideas to troubleshoot my issue but found nothing similar. Thanks in anticipation to anyone who has ideas...
Have had machine a while. Running TT5 with cabled GPS receiver.
Wanted to try bluetooth GPS device.
Two colleagues have one.
Tried one and it was hit and miss whether my PDA would 'connect' to the GPS receiver even though it would 'pair' with it fine. When it did 'connect' TT would not 'find' a GPS signal or device (depending upon which screen I am on in TT).
Went home and upgraded the ROM and firmware of the PDA to versions 1.1.
Tried the GPS device again - still no joy. Exactly the same behavior: pair = OK, connect = hit 'n miss, TT = no GPS device found.
Tried second GPS device from other colleague and the PDA will simply not connect, only pair.
Got colleague to send me 'business card' via bluetooth and I got that fine.
So some bluetooth stuff is working fine.
Any suggestions?!
