Email away from home - which way to go? I am trying to find the best way of receiving and sending emails and Internet access when I am (occasionally) away from home –including various overseas destinations (these are not all in the ‘First World’ e.g. Ghana). I was initially pointed in the Blackberry direction, but when I looked into the costs, the amount of times I would actually need this facility (3 or 4 times a year) would not justify the monthly costs (GBP20 to 30) the service providers charge for Blackberry line rental contract whatever. I am therefore now thinking along the lines of using a PDA plugged into my hotel room telephone socket, instead of the present trip to the local Internet cafe.
For the purposes of my question, let's assume that there is a) a telecom infrastructure that supports email and b) an available telephone connection. The approach I'm proposing to adopt therefore will use a suitable landline (I know this exists in the areas I'll be travelling in), rather than wireless cellular/satellite technology. Presumably I could also use a laptop, but I wanted something more convenient to carry around. Can I achieve what I want in the way I have described, and if so what is the best/recommended kit to get (PDA model, accessories, software etc.) plus any other relevant facts a newbie should be aware of!? |
