Red face GPS in PDA - Is it good enough?

Hello All,

I am completely new in PDA and GPS issue, and I would like to buy a PDA with GPS integrated.
Is there some disadvantage if we compare PDA + GPS (Dell Axim, HP) to a GPS hardware (Navman, TomTom)?
In addition, can I have also the same maps in both? How could I buy or see the maps available for the PDA+GPS?

In the case of TomTom the maps and software are identical for PDA and all-in-one devices.

Each have their own advantages. The all-in-one means one device to lug around, where as a PDA is a mini computer in your hand for getting emails, editing docs and surfing the net whilst on the go.

It really depends on 2 things. Your budget, and whether you need the funtionality of a PDa or not.

Thank you. Actually I could say that I have already the budget approved to buy an all-in-one from my wife .

I am intended to buy Dell Axim x51. Does someone have some comment about this one? And where could I find the maps to buy for it?

Dell Axim x51 comes already with maps from West Europe (in my case), but I would like to see the prices of the others in order to compare with an TomTom map for example (if it is not the same).

Sounds like it already has TomTom, and the maps of western europe installed.

What GPS reciever comes with the package? If none, then you'll need one. Total PDA normaly have packages of the x51, TomTom and reciever so worth checking the main site for their current deals.

Dell make very good, solid devices - the x51 being a very good, well spec'd PDA.

The axims are proberbly the best pda's out at the moment, my lad uses one with tomtom v6 and loves it, i have the hx4700 and its just as good. I think i prefer a pda over a stand alone as the screens bigger and vga and it can be used for other things whereas the standalones cannot.

Thumbs up In decision

Thanks sirs,
I'm really learning a lot with this post and my initial plan was to buy from the Dell Website Dell Axim x51 with all GPS kit included (West Europe map, antena, car kit, and so), but maybe it worths ($) to buy only the PDA from Dell and the rest separeted. For that I would like to know what else I would need but the GPS in order to compare if it really worths.

Here in Switzerland, PDA + GPS from Dell.com costs CHF 950,- (£395)

Only PDA Costs CHF 454,- (£189), so I would have £206 to buy in addition.

Checking www.totalpda.co.uk main page:
MAP: TomTom Navigator 6 Software - European maps: £89 (includes SD 1GB and software, correct?)

Carkit: Carcomm Powered PDA Mount for DELL X50/X51 range: £44

Receiver I had a doubt between:
Bluetooth Receiver Navman SPiN 100 - GPS Navigation system: £19 and offers a so called Atlas Maps (additional? Replace European Maps?)
or
Holux GR-230 Bluetooth GPS Receiver no Box: £39 (only receiver)

In worst case I would save £34 (CHF81,-)
In best case £54 (CHF130,-)

Can somebody tell me about the receivers?
Is that all or do I have to buy something else?
Is there some other option (cheaper) for the separated kit?
Is it a good solution? Compatibility problem?
