Default help required with memeory card

i hope you are the man to help me! recently returned from a holiday in usa. removed memory card i had used to take digital pictures/footage. put it into a wee camcorder the wife bought when we were then. it seems to have wiped everything that was on the card. ( i may have removed it without turning the camera off!). have i lost the data forever or is there any way of retrieving it ( i had viewed all the stuff on my pc but made the fatal error of not saving it. any advice gratefully received
