Default tom tom 710 sd card??? or not???

Hi everyone, I am new to this site so please forgive any faux pas on my behalf, I'm sure there will be a few lol
I recently bought a tom tom go 710 from ebay (oh dear) I hear you say, and of course as with most ebay electrical items I have come across a problem that I'm hoping someone hear will be able to help me with.

I bought it without any accessories including an sd card but the maps were supplied on dvd disk. When I turn on the unit it displays an insert sd card sign and nothing else. I then bought an sd card (san disk 2GB), formatted it, and then transfered the data from the dvd onto my pc and then onto the sd card using an sd reader/writer. But, even after all that after inserting the card and it just displayed a remove sd card with a red cross through it? I have also tried a genuine tom tom card of GB which I had and that doesn't work either, but didn't know if this was compatible. The seller assures me that the unit was tried and tested prior to being sent. What I need to know is has anyone else come across this problem or have any idea what the problem might be? is it the unit or my capability in transfering data??
thanx for any imput you might have on this problem and thanx to the kind man who has already tried to help.

It should have came with an SD card with the software on it. It sounds a bit dodgy.

Connect the TomTom to your PC using a USB>mini USB lead then insert the DVD and run the application.

It will have options for installing maps etc. You can then install to a folder on your PC, the tomtom itself or direct to the SD card.
