external aerial mounted inside

Will an external aerial for my Acer N35 work as well attached to the inside of the windscreen (lets say behind the rear view mirror) as attached to the outside of the car ? I was thinking of mounting my N35 away from the upper part of the dashboard, lower down by the air vents. So, will a lower mounted N35 with an external aerial mounted inside be better than the N35 without the extra aerial but mounted higher up?
