Can't open attachments

I am sorry if this has been subject of the forum but my searches do not show any answers to this problem.
I have an IPAQ 2490b which I bought a year ago so that I could send / receive emails when away from home. This has been OK except I cannot open any attachments. I contacted HP online help and they have given me a down load to update my IPAQ. I was informed that I need XP not Vista to carry out the download. I have Vista so I have to borrow someones PC to do this!
I use windows mobile center which is for Vista for synching. Is this IPAQ relatively old and is this why I am having this problem or there something I am not doing right?

What attachments are you trying to open and how big are they?

I have never been able to open attachments on this machine big or small! although I can see an attachment when I put the scribe to it there is no recognition and nothing happens.
I have a desk top with Vista ultimate 64. I have outlook 2007 and it is set up as the email client. I use hotmail plus. The IPAQ is a 2490b and I sync using Windows Mobile Center.
I bought this a year ago in anticipationand of going away for some time. This timn is now and I want to be able to send and receive attachments/pics etc otherwise I have wasted my money. I have been in contact with Mobile live, Windows live and HP. It appears everyone believes I should be able to open attachments but I have not been given any advice as to how to solve the problem.

The folks at the HP support forums might be able to assist you better than we can here.
