214 Backlight

Hi, I have a problem with the backlight on my 214, when I connect it to the sync cable the backlight goes out after a second or so and wont come back on until it is disconnected; I have purchased a cradle and it does the same, a friend also has a 214 and I have tried his cable again to no avail, I have carried out a soft reset and still the same; any suggestions?

I haven't carried out a hard reset yet.
