Welcome to our forums.
The 3715 is a great little unit and is perfect with TomTom. There is no model specific mount available for it yet though so a generic/universal mount is all we can recommend. Single or dual depends on you requirements.

If I opt for a single mount how elevated does the GPS receiver need to be, or is this a case of how long is a piece of string?

Default Mount & GPS

Where does the GPS unit need to be ideally positioned in the car, dashboard or as high as possible to get optimum signal?

Best spot is in the middle of the dash at the bottom of the windscreen although they can go almost anywhere as long as there is a good view of the sky.

Thanks for the advice.

From reading other threads it would appear essential to get a memory card when I order, is this true?

It's recommended to store your maps. At least 128MB is needed for the whole UK map.
