iPaq 1710 Navigator has no internet

I'm new to ipaqs and thought id just turn it on and be able to get online. Not so!
What do i need to do to get online? I'm guessing i have to buy something, please tell me what.
I was delighted when i saw what was loaded onto the 1710 (I got more than just the Sat Nav I went out to buy!) but it soon turned to diappointment when i found i couldn't just load Active Sync and email someone.
Please can someone tell me in the simplist of terms what i need to buy and what i should do with it. My desktop PC is running Windows XP home edition and i'm using broadband to connect.

I have a 1710 as well. It can't connect direct to the internet is you don't have a modem card in it. You will only be able to use Active Sync if you have a sync cable between you IPaq and your pc
