Default ActiveSync 3.8 & hx4700

Just bought an HP iPaq hx4700. It comes with Outlook 2002 and ActiveSync 3.7.1.

However, I have Outlook 2003 already installed on my PC; also I notice Microsoft have ActiveSync 3.8 available for download.

Should I ignore the HP install CDROM, and just install ActiveSync 3.8 manually (which apparently supports Outlook 2003 whereas AS 3.7.1 doesn't).

Thanks
Nigel

I am new to the forum but I hope I can help. The software I had with my hx 4700 was the same as yours but loading it was painless. I didn't load outlook from the disc, just didn't tick the box, as like you I was already running 2003 on the PC. I did load Active sync 3.7.1 and then downloaded the upgrade at the Microsoft site. I am now running version 3.8.0 (Build 5004). It was straightforward and no problems have arisen since then. So my advice is load and register then upgrade. That's how I did it a couple of weeks back and all went smoothly, well at least for me, however you know what computers are like!

Thanks for this. After initial testing in which the HP setup wizard said it would install ActiveSync 3.7.1 only, then proceeded to register my ipaq, and finish the setup wizard without actually installing ActiveSync; I decided to restore my PC to its previous state with a Ghost image backup, and start again!

Second time, I ignored the HP CDROM entirely, and just installed Active sync 3.8 off the internet. It's been fine since then.

Cheers
Nigel

PS apparently HP are supporting the hx4700 with a (paid-for) upgrade to Windows Mobile CE version 5 released a few months ago. I haven't managed to find out anything other than the initial press release. Still it's nice to know that an upgrade path will be available in due course.

I would have recommend before you do anything to update the ROM image on the PDA
Check the link out for more information.

Steve

Thanks for the heads up. Apparently, my hx4700 already came installed with the latest ROM ver 1.10.08ENG. However I have updated the end-Jul & early Aug updates (firmware & audio updates).

How long is the standard battery supposed to last? On your website you suggest 6-8 hours, and HP expect it to last "all day". My inital use suggests it will not give more than about 3-4 hours at the very most. ??
