Default Ipaq NW6515 problem with TomTom

Hi,

First post on the fourm, hopefully someone can help!

I have been using TomTom on the Ipaq with just a local map (York) which you can get for free when you setup the Ipaq.
I then managed to get hold of a GB map from my Dad's Ipaq that he has used. The problem is the GB map is 95mb, so I'm unable to copy the file onto the internal memory of the Ipaq.

So I had to put the GB map onto the SD card, i subsquently deleted the York map.

But the Tom Tom application jst isn't picking up the GB map, ''no maps found'' I thought this might be due to the map being on the SD card rather than the internal memory? So i copied the TomTom directory to the SD card, but still same problem.

Has anyone got any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

What version of TomTom am I using? Could it be the version I'm trying to use is incorrect for my version?

Any help appreciated.

Andy

you need to buy TomTom 5 software to use TomTom 5 Maps, or if its an older version of the map it simply wont work.

I can tell you, from bitter experience, that the maps have software keys which don't allow them to be moved from one device to another.

When you purchase a map, either on CD or download, you get a PRODUCT ID. In order to get the map to work once it has been installed you need an ACTIVATION CODE. You get one of these by giving TomTom your DEVICE CODE which is somehow generated by the TomTom software from your device serial number. Either automatically, or over the phone/website, you get the activation code which you type in and everything is wonderful. The same process is gone through if you purchase more maps, and PLUS services such as speed camera data.

You can reinstall as many times as you like ON YOUR DEVICE but to get the same maps to work on another device you need them to have the correct activation code. I had a hardware problem with my device and had it changed. I restored the backup of my old device and some things didn't work (traffic info, POI, assisted-GPS) and quite honestly at times I had finished my journey before TomTom worked! Anyway, I figured out what was wrong, changed the device code and everything worked well again.

However, the iPAQ turned out not to be the correct version for me (French!) and was again replaced by HP. I thought I knew what to do but it turns out TomTom only let you change your device code once every 6 months. I had an horrendous job convincing them to reset my account.

My advice is, therefore, not to meddle trying to change your Dad's device code to yours in order to use the maps. It could backfire badly because the bottom line is TomTom record all the devices which you use the maps on and if they find out what has happened you (and more importantly your Dad!!) won't be able to use the maps again.
