Default restore on IPAQ 5550

Help required please !

My IPAQ seemed to go a little crazy yesterday, and kept turning itself off. Tried several soft resets but didn't seem to resolve the problem.

So knowing that I had recently backed up, went for the hard reset option - what a mistake that was !!

set it all up again, and then confidently pressed restore, only to get the message 'selected back up file is not valid. Please select another storage file'

Does anyone know why I got this ?? and more importantly what I can do to get around it ??! The only thing I can think of is that I had to give the IPAQ a different name - would that have an effect ?

any help very much appreciated !!!

Thanks !

Matt

Iv'e had similar problems with my H2210. I eventually realised that I can save the bacup to my PC (created a folder on the desktop for it).

However I have had a lot of problems with full resets as it causes problems with the active sync partnership. When you come to re connect it thinks it is a new and different PDA and doesn't let you create the partnership with the same name and therefore with the same folder on the PC. I think you have to delete the partnership first (but don't delete the folder) so that when you re connect it can use the same name etc.

Of course if you use the restore function it takes you back to the state the PDA was in before the full reset so presumably that restores the fault as well.

Thanks Mike - very helpful - a question though - how do you delete the partnership without losing the data backed up ?

Cheers

Matt,

After performing a full or hard reset the partnership set up with ActiveSync is lost. If you just reconnect the PDA ctiveSync will think it's a different piece of kit and set up a new partnership with a different name. In the same way the restore function will not work because it will think it is a different piece of kit.

There are two options.

1. After performing the full reset, make sure that the regional settings are as they were before the reset. The default is English USA, and I'm assuming that like me that was changed to English UK. This makes a difference and is enough to trick the system into thinking it is a different PDA. Having done this re connect the PDA and ActiveSync will go through the process of re establishing the partnership. The default, I think, is called pocket pc but if you called it something else then you can change the title accordingly. After completing this it will either sync your folder or ask if you want to sync the folder.

2. If this fails then disconnect the PDA and open ActiveSync. From there delete the partnership and you will be asked if you want to delete the folder as well - you do not!. After doing this reconnect the PDA and ActiveSync will go through the process of asking if you want to set up a partnership with your PC or a guest mode. Select the pc partnership and it will set up using the default (pocket pc) name. Having done this it will then ask if you wan to sync with the folder etc.

After both options above the restore function will also work (It is important to make sure that the regional settings are as they were)

Hope this makes sense, it always does when you can picture what to do. Let me know how you get on.

I believe that just choose guest when you active sync will also allow you to restore from a backup without any messing about, might need the backup file moving to the new folder, i have not tried it though i read it in another forum.

I had the same problem with active sync, now i always backup to my CF card, then once a week copy it to my pc to be safe, i have done loads of restores from the cf card without any problems.

Once bitten and all that.

So the instructions will have you believe, however in practice when I tried it I was given the option of two backup files and neither worked because it thought I had a different device. I therefore had to delete the original partnership as above which worked fine.
