Default Rx3715 - CRASHED

Can anyone help ?
Surfed the web last night (wifi) and as I was about to log off the PDA hung major!. Did a soft reset and it goes into the usual routine but once the desktop comes up it go into the reset routine again ie its in a loop.
I left it in the cradle over night and now I can hold it in the 'desktop screen' but it does not open up properly so I am stuck.
Is hard reset only option ??? ie I will loose tomtom and all other stuff.........have most stuff backed up on PC so should be OK. If the answer is YES then is it worth doing the ROM upgrade from the HP website and the build it all up again. - what a pain !!
