Thumbs up ActiveSync Partnership clutter

Hi

I am using ActiveSync 3.8 with an HPiPAQ 2210 and Pocket PC 2003. I perform a full backup regularly.

Over the last couple of years I have had to hard reset my pda numerous times, which has meant that ActiveSync has created a new partnership with my pc each time. As a result, all my old partnerships still exist which means I can't reuse the partnership names I've used before. Also, I have a long list of backup folders bearing the various partnership names I've chosen in the past. These are just some of the folders that still exist on my pc:

Pocket PC
Pocket_PC
Pocket_PC-1
Pocket_PC-2
iPAQ
iPAQ_1

You get the picture!

I wanted to get rid of this clutter so I deleted these old folders from my backup location. But ActiveSync thinks they still exist (and I guess they still do but I don't know where) because when I created yet another new partnership today, I tried to re-use one of my old partnership names (Pocket_PC) but I received an error message during the creation of the partnership telling me the name is already in use.

My questions are:
1 - how can I get rid of old partnerships?
2 - do I delete setting on my pc and on my pda?
3 - If so, how?
4 - If I change the location of the backup file, does ActiveSync automatically create the folder to contain the backup file (e.g. Pocker_PC My Documents) or can I choose a different name and location?
5 - I am told by HP that I can only backup data and not settings. So after each hard reset I have to recreate all my customizations and re-register my third part software, which is a pain. Is this the case or does someone know of a way to save settings also?

Thanks in advance
Jackie D

If you need to reset a 2002/3 PDA and keep the partnership, then set the date & time on the device. Next rename the device under settings to exactly the same as it was before the hardreset.

Connect the device, and if you have auto backup, cancel this when it starts. Next restore the last backup, and your device *should* be back to the way it was.

Hi

Thanks for the suggestion - it sounds interesting - but doesn't really help with my questions. I really just need to know how to delete old partnerships etc.

My questions were:

3 - If so, how?

Without your PDA connected, open active sync.

File > partnerships nd there is an option in there to delete. Simply delete each defunct partnership until only the valid one(s) are left.

This will delete everything associated with those partnerships, including backups.

You don't need to do anything on the PDA.
