HP 3970 Serial Cable requirement

I have a need to connect a laptop with no USB facilities to my HP 3970, and so need serial cable to complete connection.
Can I use the one I had for my HP 3630 ? Some places say they are not compatible but I have seen others which described as suitable for ' all IPAQs'.

As the application is for a portable system the use of a serial cradle is not an option ( unless I can get the cables out of the hardware !)

Any advice would be much appreciated.

We havent sold anything like this for a while and I'm sure teh old 36xx series had a different connection from the more current ipaqs.
