I have managed to get it to connect via wi fi at home to go on to the internet, but when i have it linked with the computer via the cradle it wont go on to the internet, should it do this?

I had the same problem with my nearly new 6910. You need to have an internet connection, I used a wifi connection while it was sitting in the cradle. Then, if you go into programs, there should be an icon that says Get a Map. I clicked on that and went through the process of downloading a free city map.( Pages 5 and 6 of GPS Section in manual ) At first I kept getting an error so emailed TomTom. This was a used unit so I assumed someone else had used the map so I bought TT Nav 6 on sd card. I didnt really need it because I have a Nuvi 360! When I tried it next day, it worked and i downloaded a map. Drat!
The city maps are quite big, my map is Dover, it seems to cover most of East Kent including all the villages and the area I live ( Whitstable).
Anyway, good luck, you should be able to get the free map somehow. You paid for it!!!!
