Replacement for Ipaq hx4700

Anyone care to suggest a replacement for an Ipaq hx4700?

Same size or larger screen, wi-fi and bluetooth, decent memory would all be minimum specs.

The ipaq 214 should be here in February.
Its exactly what your looking for.

Thanks. I see that Infra Red connectivity is missing but Windows Mobile has been upgraded to v6. Are there any other significant differences? Or is it a mainly cosmetic update to the hx4700?

It has a Mini USB connection and no infra red but it has all the other main features of the 4700

We have them in stock now.

Hi, I have just received my 214 to replace my now sadly inoperable hx4700. It is very good. Brighter screen, faster, more capacity, better applications. I have though found two problems. The Bluetooth GPS that I used with Memory map software will not operate correctly (Bluetooth connects, but there is no data being sent across the link) on the 4700 it worked perfectly. The other problem is that the docking connector is different, and I used my old 4700 to upload to a Garmin Aviation GPS that requires a simple serial connection. I cannot appear to do this as I cannot get hold of the connector plug and pinout.

Other than that I am really pleased with it.

Yeah it wont work with the serial connection on the garmin as its mini USB.

For the bluetooth did you create a new outgoing port for it?

Its under the connections-bluetooth-com ports tab.

Hi, Yes I did manage to create a bluetooth connection to the GPS, but it took some doing, The serial port created by the bluetooth for input was Port 5, and sure enough it was listed under the Com ports as COM5:Bluetooth Serial Port COM. In fact it used port 6. This is hard to discover as the bluetooth switches off after about 40 seconds if no data is sent, so trial and error (each com port at each speed) took some time to resolve!

Do you have any means of getting hold of teh 24 pin connector so I can wire up my own serial connector?

Hi Steve W, You've saved me on this one - as an ex-hx4700 owner I've been trying com port 8 on my new HP214 for what seems like all day to connect a bluetooth GPS into Memory-Map - I started working through each port and got fed up at com 5.

Many thanks for your post - I'm now proudly looking at a glowing red circle in the PDA - at last.

The HP214 is an ideal replacement for the hx4700 but the screen is not so responsive - there seems to be a 1mm standoff distance giving a soft response to the stylus pressure. It was hard to get hold of one in the UK - as this machine is selling very well.
