Ipaq HP 214 / HP 210 the BIG Hiss

I've had the HP Enterprise HP 214 (sold as the HP 210 in US) for 3 days and it has a very bad hiss on the audio - I've partly cancelled this out in TCPMP by using a preamp increase of 100; but this should not be required. Before I return to the retailer has anyone else had this problem and is there a simple solution? Many thanks, Pete.
