614c phone signal

My 614 keeps losing signal and I have to switch it off and on again to re-search and connect.

I have been told that it automatically looks for a 3G signal, then looses it and gets confused, or something like that.

Can the 3G be turned off?
Would I be better getting a different sim without 3G capability?
