ICN 510 - I am useless

I have got the Navman 510 but it's got no sotfware on it , except the smart ST version 3, I am trying my level best to get a map on it , but i just cant do it. I have lots of different software but what files do i actually use , and do i transfer them via USB or the memory card . I've read all the posts but nothing has helped as everyone is far beyond the basics. Any info on how to go on about this will be very much appreciated and will save me alot of petrol too.
