Default MIO 168 speaker fault

The sound from the speaker on my -otherwise brilliant- 168 is really distorted on both my satnav and windows media player. It's so bad that I have to use earphones even for my satnav.

Is this a common problem and are there any fixes etc? I've tried installing the sound patch from the Mitac web site but that makes no difference.

Help!

I haven't had to use the patch myself but a friend said he followed the instructions, which he made a copy of, and it worked fine. (second attempt).

He e-mailed me the instructions. Hope they help.

- copy the patch (wavedev.cab) to an SD-card and insert the card in the Mio168 SD-socket.

- Navigate to the wavedev.cab file from the file explorer and tap the file to start installation.

- Soft-reset the Mio168 with the button in the little hole on the left (use the stylus point to push), the patch is applied now.

- Install the patch after every data loss (for example by empty battery). It is recommended to make a backup after installation from the system to an SD-card. This can be done with the program "ebackup", location start/programs/ebackup. After data loss, you can easily re-install the patch with the "ebackup" program and as a bonus all your personal data and programs installed on date of backup, are installed again.

He said after installing it it appeared not to work, he then realised he had missed the instruction 'Soft-reset the Mio168 with the button in the little hole on the left (use the stylus point to push), the patch is applied now'.

I've tried that many times but all I get is the message I mentioned above and it won't let me proceed beyond that point. It's very irritiating!

Guess I'll have to try Mitac direct.

I am now on my SECOND Mio 168! The first lasted less than 2 weeks and the sound suddenly stopped working. The replacement then lasted about 3 weeks before that too stopped "talking" to me!

I'm now trying to get my money back from the supplier (Sale of Goods Act). I will NOT be getting another Mio 168!!!
