Question NavMan and Ipaq questions

Hi,

I am new to this forum, so firstly hello.

I have an iPAQ 3630 and I'm interested in buying one of the Navman GPS jackets, but I have some questions I hope people could help me with. I'd like to use the GPS in the car and also when out walking.

1. The brochure for the 3300 show screen shots of what appears to be Ordnance Survey maps (great for walking) for but the 3450 only shows Navman maps. Can the 3450 also display Ordnance survey maps?

2. Does anyone know how long the battery on the iPAQ would last when using it as a GPS? (I'm assuming the jacket does not have an additional internal battery)

3. The brochures also state that both 3300 and 3450 are compatible with a 3600 series iPAQ. But on www.totalpda.co.uk it says that the 3450is only compatible with 3850, 3870, 3900 series. Can someone tell me if my iPAQ will operate the 3450?

Many thanks

OS landranger maps on a PDA ? easy just buy memory map then you will have the most detailed maps you are likely to need, because i am bluetooth GPS I don't have the jacket but I think it will work without problems, remember as the maps are really detailed you will need a decent sized memory card ie 2 areas of mm plus the road map will nearly fill 256mb
C7KEN 4150 ipaq with 4400 bluetooth navman very happy

Thanks C7KEN. I have a couple of 128mb cards for my camera which would do the job.

What about battery life, how long does the ipaq battery run for as a GPS?

My concern is that over a nine hour walk it would konk out.

Matt,
I don't think you will get anything like the battery life you will need when walking around, prob only 2-3 hours. This can be extended by plugging in an external battery, such as the type you see on eBay. (cost approx £10 and hold 4 AA batteries) this mat help. Another option is to use Google and search for external battery packs for Ipaq's, there is 1 from the states that could last you a complete day's walking, if you have the facility for carrying sapres or recharging the batteries (if you use re-chageables).

Hope this helps

Neil

Hi matt90110,

I too went down the same route as you but had tomtom navigator 2 already so I opted for the 3300 package which has the software you describe for taking its mapping from OS maps which are not supplied with it. As far as I can tell the 3450 and the 3300 use the same hardware sleeve as both are marked Navman SE it would seem that it is the software package that differs, I have asked this same question of Navman are they the same? and got nowhere with them... but from my 3300's performance I guess they are and NO the sleeve does not have a second battery fitted... Now onto battery life you are looking at 4 hours tops my HP 5455 gives me this, but be warned if as I did the other day caught a button putting it in it's case the next moring I had to restore from a backup.

As for compatability according to Navman these sleeves are for use with for iPAQ™ H3600, H3700, H3800, H3900, H5150, H5450 H5550 series so yes it should fit.

Regards

ErnieS

Yeah it does fit your PDA, nine hours is fairly long for your PDA to last in constant use with GPS based software, especially if you have voice commands running.

I use a 3630 quite happily with a Navman3450 in the car. This causes no problems as you can plug it into the cigarette lighter.

No way without extra power will it last 9 hours if you leave the unit switched on. If you are simply going to turn it on anf off to check positioning etc you might make it.

The literature states battery life as 3 - 4 hours, however, if your 36** like mine is a couple of years old the battery will only last an hour or so.

Possble solutions to help

1 - Ensure you turn off the backlighting etc.
2 - Turn it on, check your position and then off until you need it again
3 - Replace the battery, they can be found as spares on Ebay
4 - Get an external battery - again found on Ebay for around £8.00 +P&P
5 - Get an external jacket with two CF slots and a CF GPS receiver.
6 - Using Tomtom 2 the whole of the UK (Roads etc) is around 90MB
7 - The Navman and Copilot maps are split so you can load only the bits you need.

Cheers
