TomTom 5 and wired GPS

I have a M2000 with a Garmin etrex wired gps. When im on my tracels it will operate for 5 mins then crash tom tom. I have tried the GPS on serial port 1 and 7 still the same problem? Any ideas? Do i need to upgrade to 5.1 on tomtom? The phone is brand new and has the 2003 o/s version 2. Also a side issue will the m2000 be upgradeable to pocket 2005?
