Question regarding Palm PDA, multiple computers, and personal information managers. I have researched Palm PDA’s and it as becoming increasing evident to me that the Palm PDA’s are somewhat limited. I have found that after hot syncing with a computer’s Personal Information Manager” PIM “software (i.e. Palm Desktop, GroupWise, or Outlook) there is an established one-to-one relationship between the PDA and a user. In other words, the PDA can only be synchronized successfully on the computer it was synchronized with in the first hot synch using the “PIM”and user it was synched with. Additionally, there can only be one user on the PDA
My question is, I am correct in these observations, or can the PDA, after an initial hot synch, be synched with a second computer with another ‘PIM” as along as the user name is the same as in the original synchronization? Furthermore can a second user be established on the PDA, and synched to a second user.
I have been experimenting with an old Palm m105. I installed and hot synched the PDA to my work GroupWise client using a third party program called PDA Connect. I synched with the GroupWise client just fine. Then, I took the PDA home and installed Palm Desktop 4.1.4 and Hot Synch Manager 4.1.0. I and created a second user with data to synch the Palm to. I then successfully completed synchronization, but the PDA created a user on the Palm Desktop with the original user name, and copied all the data that was in the PDA to the Palm Desktop. The new user data was just ignored.
All above computers are using Windows XP with the latest updates. The reason for the question is I have user who want to utilize PDA’s at work and I am just not up to speed on these devices. Palm documentation describes the Hot Synch Manager, Palm Desktop, and conduits however they do not illustrate the interaction between multiple computers and “PIM’s”. Any input on this subject matter would be appreciated. |
