Hi all (new user...and I've put this in the wrong forum methinks!), I've spent the last week scouring the net looking for different PDA's, comparing reviews, etc... and figured it might be useful to get some advice from some PDA veterans.

About £400 represents the limit I am willing to pay, and what I consider important/not important I'll list below.

Important:
-Memory size
-Battery life
-Reliability & sturdyness

Not Important
Phone
GPS (not yet anyway)
Camera

Some software I'm looking to install on one would be an encyclopedia, foreign dictionaries, a decent scientific calculator, and maybe a c++ compiler..I'm betting that the OS would be important here (or maybe not)

Some of the models i've looked at are
Dell Axim x51
HP IPAQ 2(4/7)90
Fujitsu loox 2560
Palm T|X

All of the above have had good reviews but also have their own little flaws here and there. Does anyone have any advice?

You would get all of the software you are looking for on any of those PDA's. I'm not sure about a C++ compiler though I dont recall seeing anything like that for a PDA. We mostly sell the HP PDA's as they are great units and you would probably find the Windows software more familiar. You might also want to look at this model.

Its pretty much the same spec as the 2490 you looked at but with built in GPS and tomtom software. It also 2Gb of memory which is the most in any PDA at the moment.
