Default Software versions for CPU's

Looking at some web sites to download additional programs and utilities, there are versions for "Arm", "Mips", "Sh3", "X-scale"... What processors do these relate to, and what should I look for to be compatible with an iPAQ 4700?

Those are the names of the CPUs. Your iPAQ uses the Intel PXA270 X-Scale CPU.

Simple, like anything once you know the answer.

Is there any compatibility, or can you only use the version for each CPU?

Most are not compatible unless specificied but Activesync will tell you if it's not compatible when you try to install it.
