Yes, the backlight draws quite a bit more power on full brightness when compared with the lowest setting..

Think of it as the lights in your home. A 100w bulb is nice n bright but uses more electricity than a 40w bulb being dimmer BUT if you step down to a 4w bulb you can still see enough not to bump into things in the dead of night but are using only 4/100ths of the origional energy.
