MIO 168 Active sync problem

Hi all
just got a mio 168 but it will not sync to desktop
just shows unknown device in device manager on the d/t
gone through all the help, to no avail
i am running win xp pro
any ideas ?
managed to install tom tom 5 just by using the sd card, works fine but i would like to be able to use the sync method

sorted , got onto mitac demanded a new cable arrived today, synced no prob
