Angry How long should it last ???

Can anyone advise please,

(This is my first PDA)

I have just purchased a Navman Pin 570 Pin PDA. After the usual 18 hour initial first charge, I found it had gone from 100% battery to dead after about 12 hrs, turned off. I returned to the store and they found the infrared port was enabled and stated this was causing the battery to run down as it was looking for signals. This was then disabled.

The PDA will now last about 24 hrs from full charge (without any use) I still feel this cannot be right. The store where I brought (curry's) state this is correct as a PDA does not power down, it just goes into a 'deep sleep'

Can anyone confirm if this is correct. I cannot believe that a PDA should be able to go from full charge to dead (with no use) in 24 hrs. This means the PDA needs to be permenantly charging else it will be flat!

The other problem when the battery goes flat is that all the PDA settings like time/date/owner info are then lost (again, the store stated that as there is no hard drive and PDA settings are saved in flash memory, they will always be lost when the PDA looses all battery power)

I have ensured all my data is saved to the memory card to avoid loss but the config such as date/time etc cannot be. Even more annoying than the battery being flat and always needing to be kept on charge, is keep re inputting date / time / owner details again and again.

I cannot believe that a modern PDA should only last 24 hrs (without being used) then loose all of your settings.

Any advice would be appreciated so I can go back to the store.

Thanks

Doesn't sound right to me. My HP 2210 lasts two weeks without a charge when I'm on holiday, with occasional use, but I never look to see how flat the battery is at the end of the two weeks.

If the battery is fully discharged then all info is lost which is one reson to keep a backup etc. But to be doing that every two days doesn't seem right to me.

Not sure if the workings are the same as my Mio 168 but two things come to mind.

1. Are there any programs running in the background and are you able to stop them? (Memory/System/Running programs (or similar)).

2. With the Mio the On/Off button works in two ways. A quick press turns you unit off. Hold it for about a second or more and it goes into sleep mode. The screen appears to go off but if checked carefully can still be seen to be on, although very dim.

With my Mio switched off and not used, needs a weekly top up.

1. There are no programs running in the background, I use the end task option to ensure nothing is running on the PDA.

2. My on/off button works the same, a quick press turns off fully and a long press puts it to sleep but it will come back on if the screen is touched.

It sounds like the battery must be faulty then as it is going from full charge to flat in less than 24 hours with nothing running and fully switched off. I just was unsure what was a normal average for a charged battery to retain its charge while switched off. Clearly it should not be less than 24 hrs as mine is currently doing.

If you're certain nobody accidently interrupted the initial charge then it certainly looks like a faulty battery.

Theres something wrong with it if it only lasts 24 hours.....it shold do 24 hours (not a guarantee rather an approx) if used continuosly and a few days at least on standby. Take it back to where you bought it.
