 Active Sync and connection probs

Forgive a newbie's ignorance, but.....
I have an ipaq 3660 (which has been running happily for years) but recently I cannot connect to it on my desktop PC using Active Sync. I have been using v3.5 up til now, but AS no longer detects my device as attached. I am using a USB cradle and have tried in different USB ports but no change. My desktop system (running XP) detects the cradle if I move it to another port, but that's it. I have bought a new sync cable but that doesn't solve my problem. I have also tried AS v3.8 but again no improvement. Is my ipaq stuffed?
