ActiveSync 4.1 and Zone Alarm (Free) Solution

I had problems with ActiveSync 4.1 and the ZoneAlarm Free Edition. I found the Microsoft troubleshooting guide and followed it but found it related to the Pro version only beyond a certain stage.
I thought I was going to have to upgrade to the ZoneAlarm Pro version but then found this solution on a site
